Connect xpnAi to OpenAI Codex
Give Codex access to your xpnAi Workspace and verify the connection before building reports or preparing finance work.
Use case
You want to use OpenAI Codex to analyse your Xero data and turn the results into useful reports, dashboards or repeatable finance workflows.
Introduction
Codex connects to xpnAi through a remote MCP server. You need membership of an xpnAi Workspace with an active trial or subscription and a connected Xero organisation. Complete xpnAi's guided setup first, or reuse your team's Workspace.
For the Codex CLI, check existing connections with codex mcp list. If xpnAi is not already configured, run:
codex mcp add xpnAi --url https://api.xpnai.app/mcp
codex mcp login xpnAiComplete the browser sign-in and choose the intended Workspace. In a Codex interface with Settings > MCP servers, you can instead add the same URL as a Streamable HTTP server and authenticate it. Use the controls available in your installed client; OpenAI's MCP documentation covers configuration and OAuth sign-in.
This article uses Codex. ChatGPT web has its own connection setup; follow the xpnAi client guide if that's where you want to work.
Prompts
1. Connect to your existing Workspace
Read https://help.xpnai.app/skill.md and connect this Codex
session to my existing xpnAi Workspace, [Workspace name].
Check for a matching connection before adding one.
Use the supported browser sign-in flow for this client.2. Verify the data and tools
Use xpnAi get_context to confirm my Workspace and available
Xero organisations. Show import status and last successful sync.
Discover the tools available to this connection and explain
which support analysis and which require write permissions.
Do not start finance work until the connection is verified.3. Prepare a first report
Using xpnAi, prepare a monthly revenue and operating-expense
summary for [organisation], January to August 2026.
Use its base currency and show the account definitions used.
Include a trend chart and a table of the source totals.
Explain missing data instead of substituting estimates.
Keep this task read-only in Xero.Output
Expect a verified Workspace context followed by a report with explicit period, currency and account definitions. How the chart is displayed depends on the files and visual tools available in your Codex session.
Next, use the finance dashboard walkthrough to turn that first report into a more useful view.
